Matteo Cancellieri Demonstrates Glimpses of Genius in Silver Lining for Unstable Lazio

The atmosphere at the Stadio Olimpico was decidedly gloomy on Saturday afternoon. The home side was losing against Torino, a side that had conceded ten goals while managing only two goals in their last five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were finishing their most recent demonstration in a continuous dispute with chairman Claudio Lotito.

A Season Falling Apart?

Was the team's progress falling apart, or had there never been a thread maintaining its structure to start with? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri as manager in the summer transfer window, before he publicly stated that the club had omitted to inform him about a registration embargo they were facing for accounting issues. Rumours that his departure was imminent were without basis, but he did say that Lotito had "swindled" him.

Lazio became as messy in their performances as off the field, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in the remaining initial five matches, which included the capital clash. Throughout this period, it has been hard to ascertain if they are improving or imploding.

The Youngster's Unexpected Return

At least one man remained positive through it. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to remain with Lazio during this campaign. He completed last season on loan at Parma and, at the start of the off-season, his parent club were pushing for him to remain there for another season. The registration embargo led to a change of plans. Lazio could not afford to thin their squad without replacements.

He signed in the first place when Sarri was last in charge, at that time a 20-year-old alumnus of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 league appearances in Lazio colors in 2022-23, all but one of those as a substitute. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed after that campaign, later stated Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri was destined for stardom only to bench him consistently."

Uncovering His Natural Fit

It's possible the coach was still trying to determine the specific characteristics of his skill set. Labeled as an attacking winger when he joined, Cancellieri yet was deployed for the majority of that term as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. Across 63 games during spells with Empoli and Parma in the past two years, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
